Chapter Thirteen

Gio

I unfolded from the uncomfortable couch. There wasn’t a piece of furniture other than a California king bed that comfortably fit my large frame. The nights I’d slept on the floor at the beach house had hurt my back and hips.

Being tall was a pain in the ass. My old man reminded me of that often. At five, I was over five feet tall. Then they complained I ate too much and my feet were too big for kid-sized shoes. My clothes didn’t fit me right: sleeves too short, pant legs above my ankles. And then the furniture was too small.

My twin bed was uncomfortable as hell. It had come from the thrift store, so it was worn and old, to begin with. When it broke in half, the floor became my bed. When I went to Italy and lived in luxury, and found furniture and clothing that accommodated my large body, I knew I would never live in poverty again.

I set my big feet on the cold floor; there was a bottle of aspirin and a glass of water on the dark wood coffee table. I didn’t have a hangover. My head didn’t thump, and my stomach wasn’t upset. The beer gave me a buzz but didn’t get me drunk like liquor. I was glad I’d stayed away from the scotch and tequila last night.

Thank God she hadn’t opened the drapes to let in the bright sunlight of a new day. I wasn’t ready to face the day. I had some ass-kissing to do.

The aroma of bacon drifted around the room, and my stomach growled. I looked for my pants. I had to pee and didn’t want to parade around Simone’s house in my underwear. I grabbed them from the floor by the couch and pulled them on. I didn’t bother with my shirt.

Simone was in the kitchen. At the stove, she worked food around in a pan. The radio played, and her hips swayed to the hip-hop music. Her shapely hips were tucked inside blue shorts. Her legs were bare, and the white tank top fit her like a second skin.

She had rhythm, soul, and some sexy ass moves. I watched her body dip and pop. My foot tapped to the beat because of what she was doing. I couldn’t dance worth a damn, but watching her made me want to try.

The song ended, and she turned to transfer the contents from the pan to a dish. Her eyes caught mine. “You’re up,” she said.

“Yeah. I wasn’t spying on you. You can dance. What was that song?”

She grinned. “Thanks. That was A Boogie wit da Hoodie ‘Look Back at It.’ I love that song.”

“I’ll have to remember that when I want you to dance for me again.”

She leveled me with a direct gaze. “Dance for you? I don’t think so. Breakfast is ready. Have a seat.”

I grinned. “I need to wash up first. Bathroom?”

“Down the hall, first door on the left,” she answered.

She continued to dish food on plates, keeping her eyes off me.
